Veynuus is a multidisciplinary advisory and communications firm headquartered in Mogadishu. The firm works at the join between a decision and its delivery: the point at which a ministry has a policy but no operating plan, an agency has a programme running but no evidence of what it changed, or a company has identified a market and has no route into it. It is female-founded and female-led, and works across Somalia, Kenya, Nigeria and neighbouring markets in the Horn of Africa.

What the firm does

Our work takes three broad shapes. The first is advisory: helping an institution decide something, with the analysis assembled to a standard the decision can later be defended on. The second is delivery. Registration files, financial systems, recruitment rounds and communications production all end in a document, a system or a functioning process rather than in a recommendation. The third is evidence: research, monitoring and evaluation, and the data work that tells a client whether what they built is doing what they intended it to do.

What holds those together is a preference for outputs that survive handover. A strategy that cannot be costed, a dataset with no provenance, or an evaluation that arrives after the funding decision has been taken are all, in practice, unfinished work.

The six practices

The firm runs six practices. They are staffed separately and sold as one firm, because the problems clients bring rarely respect the boundaries between them. A ministry asking for a communications campaign usually turns out to need the underlying policy written down first; a company asking for market entry usually needs its financial records in order before anything else can proceed.

• Research, Data & Policy: survey design and fieldwork, monitoring and evaluation, and policy analysis.
• Financial Advisory & Management: bookkeeping and financial systems, tax registration and compliance, and audit preparation.
• Business & Trade Services: company registration and licensing, market entry, and trade and investment advisory.
• Human Capital Services: recruitment and executive search, organisational design, and training.
• Governance & Public Sector Advisory: institutional strengthening and public financial management support for federal and state government bodies.

Where we work

Mogadishu is the base, and Somalia is where most of our delivery happens, including in the federal member states rather than the capital alone. Beyond Somalia we work in Kenya and Nigeria and in neighbouring markets. Operating from Mogadishu rather than from Nairobi or Dubai is deliberate: proximity is what makes fieldwork, filing in person at government counters, and same-week site attendance possible at a cost a client will accept.

How the firm is structured

Teams are assembled per engagement. The practice that owns the problem leads and draws in specialists from the others, which is why a research engagement may carry a financial analyst. Every piece of work has a named lead accountable for it end to end, and every deliverable goes through internal review before it reaches the client. We hire locally and train on live engagements rather than in classrooms.

How we engage

Most engagements begin with a scoping conversation and end in a written proposal stating the method, the deliverables, the assumptions and what we would need from the client to hold the timeline. We prefer to say what a piece of work will not answer as well as what it will. Clients include United Nations agencies, among them IOM, UNMAS and FAO, federal and state ministries, and privately held companies.
