Shaping the Future: World Youth Skills Day 2024 in Somalia

In 2024, Somalia prepared to commemorate World Youth Skills Day under the theme of strengthening youth agency, skills, and employment. With millions of youth across the country facing uncertain job prospects, this moment presented an opportunity to spotlight youth voices and push for scalable policies on training, employment, and inclusion.

Veynuus was engaged to provide strategic guidance, coordination support, and post-event reporting for the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS), with financial support from IOM. Our involvement focused on helping MOYS refine the day’s agenda, shape the year’s theme, identify relevant speakers and panels, and ensure meaningful engagement. The event included public and private stakeholders, youth organizations, civil society, international agencies, and ministries of labor and education.

Our Support in Focus

To ensure the success of the World Youth Skills Day 2024, Veynuus provided multi-dimensional support across the event lifecycle—from initial planning to post-event reporting. Our role was not limited to logistics or coordination, but extended to shaping the narrative, identifying stakeholders, and enabling purposeful dialogue. Each step was designed to create space for youth voices, influence national conversations, and set the foundation for long-term impact.

Connecting Policy to Action

This project brought together diverse actors including private sector representatives, international NGOs, government officials, and youth-led organizations. Through curated panels and Q&A sessions, young people directly shared their challenges, aspirations, and ideas for skills development. The presence of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs further aligned the event with employment and training strategies

Fostering Inclusive Youth Development

One of the key takeaways from this engagement was the importance of cross-sector collaboration. By uniting different actors in one room, MOYS and its partners were able to map out future pathways for youth economic participation, both in urban and rural contexts.

A Launchpad for Scalable Change

The insights gathered informed a set of recommendations now being used to develop future youth events and skills strategies. As MOYS and its partners explore long-term youth programming, this case stands as a reference point for how inclusive design, preparation, and facilitation can result in impactful youth engagement.
